A closer shot of the device hole shows a lot of blackened wood caused from the original iron carriage bolts that were used to install the device .

The stem was replaced once before in an earlier restoration . unfortunately ash was used instead of white oak . Ash is a lot easier to find than white oak , but has little decay resistance .

The nails are removed and the old stem pulled out .
