Just
as I was about to finish of the sheer plank the discussion arose . " How are you
going to round over the bow into a nice bull nose ? --I hadn't anticipated a
bull nose bow in the design stage . After some exchanges of scanned photos ,
faxed sketches and attempted verbal descriptions on the telephone I had a rough
idea in my mind of what to do .
These are a couple of compute generated concepts . The top one is the rounded
bow superimposed on a photo of the boat . The second shot is a simulation of the
final shape .
To round off the bow the sheer planks have to end further back than on a pointed
bow or else they get feathered down when the bow is rounded . The stem head was
modified to accommodate a large block of mahogany . The block shown here is four
inches tall and fourteen inches wide .
Everything will be left large until the deck is on , then there will be lots of
carving to do to blend everything together .

The modified bow with the sheer plank installed . The rabet line
sweeps back here and will allow rounding and shaping of the nose later without
cutting into the plank . I've also started to fair off the sides with a spoke
shave ( more on that later )
