The side planks all have splits , and several piecemeal patches that
have been put in over the years .

While working my way down the sides I didn't manage to find one
useable plank .From a labour standpoint it's sometimes more economical
to re-plank the whole boat . To remove the clenched over nails from a
plank that you want to save takes about five or six hours . ---If I'm
not going to save the plank I can remove the old nails and make a new
plank in about three or four hours .

At this point the sheer plank is still original , but it has
several splits and a couple of patches .
